In December 2023, The Midland Reporter Telegram stated that for decades the Midland Basin has yielded oil and natural gas riches from the Spraberry Trend to, more recently, the Wolfcamp. Now the prolific region is offering up a new source. Enverus Intelligence Research, a subsidiary of the energy-focused Software as a Service firm Enverus, issued a report examining how various exploration and production companies are testing the Barnett formation in the Midland Basin. “Sometimes the best place to find new oil is in already-producing areas, which neatly describes what’s happening in the Midland Basin in Texas,” said Emily Head, report author and a senior associate at EIR, in a statement. Head noted that the Barnett is buried 1,000 feet deeper than the Wolfcamp, which means companies owning deep drilling rights in the area can expand their inventories of well locations.
In March 2024, Occidental Permian LTD filed Initial Potential tests data with the Texas RRC for 4 wells located in the Emma (Barnett Shale) field South Curtis Ranch lease in Martin County. The wells are located approximately 8 miles northwest of Midland, Texas in Section: 33, Block: 39 T1N, Survey: T&P RR CO, Abstract: 312.
The highest IP Completion was the # 3399OP South Curtis Ranch Well (API# 31745105H1). The well flowed 2883 barrels of oil, 8031 Mcfg, GOR 2785, and 2258 barrels of water during the 24’ Initial Potential Test Data with BOED 4222.
